Root Barriers
Simply put, Root Barriers are various products designed to allow Hard scapes and Landscapes to exist together, without one periodically doing expensive damage to the other. Hard scapes, such as foundations, sidewalks, pavement, are a costly investment as are Landscape features, such as trees. Everyone has seen the results of tree roots cracking and damaging sidewalks, streets, concrete structures, and pavement. The roots are in a constant search for air, moisture, and nutrients. Hard scape features block access, so the roots have to find a way to break through blockades to get what they need, usually ending in costly repairs being necessary.
In the early 1990’s, products were being designed to allow the root systems to be deflected away from hard scape features by the use of root barriers. At first, these barriers were concrete, which would crack and fail to obtain the desired result. With further research, better options were created, involving sheets of certain plastics, which are able to handle the suction, soil movement, and moisture occurring underground.  Also effective depending on your needs are modular panels, or pre -molded single pieces of polyethylene. These barriers are placed underground at strategic areas to enable the tree to keep growing, but the roots are blocked, and their route is simply diverted away from the structure in danger, whether it is a home, business, street, sidewalk, etc.

Prior to the invention of root barriers as they are available today, Residential and Commercial property owners could routinely expect costly, unsafe upheavals of sidewalks, pools, other structures on the property, streets, and foundations. The required repairs were quite expensive, and usually took a considerable amount of time to finish, only to see the same problems surface again over time.
Root barriers are made of differing textile fabrics with long life spans. Some barriers contain herbicides which prevent the growth of weeds as well. These methods of root control are long-lasting and effective, saving money and preventing damage or destruction of properties, roadways, buildings, pools, virtually any hard scape in the direct route of thirsty, spreading, pervasive roots.

The damage to trees in this battle for survival results in many environmental deficits. Damaged, weakened, nutrient-starved trees are sickly and therefore susceptible to many attacks. Harmful insects, the countless diseases trees have to fight off, and being unable to withstand severe weather causes the loss of thousands of trees yearly. Trees give off the very oxygen we breathe, while absorbing dangerous carbons from the air. They help in the fight against global warming. Trees also assist in conserving natural resources by keeping homes and businesses cooler in summer and warmer in the winter. Added to these dismal facts, trees don’t grow back or regain health overnight. It takes decades for a tree to mature, so the ability for trees to survive and thrive in our world is critical!
Over the years, root barriers have improved greatly and have become an economical way to keep Hardscapes and Landscapes thriving side-by-side. When planning to build, either residentially or commercially, the wise course is to seek the assistance of a company that has been working with root barriers since their inception.  There are various methods of root barrier installation and materials. Expert tree companies with Certified Arborists and skilled root barrier installers will provide skilled and knowledgeable information and advise you on the best course for your particular needs. This truly ingenious method of protection for trees and man-made hardscape systems we all depend upon, has devolved into a workable environmental solution. Do your best for your Residence or business and call us today for a consultation on the installation of Root Barriers on your property. You will be enhancing the lives of people and nature-contributing to safer walking, driving, and living conditions for all.
